Prof. Samukawa’s commentary was featured in articles related to the “Top 100 Tech Companies in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea” special report by the leading Taiwanese business magazine Business Today (published on July 29, 2026).
In the article, Prof. Samukawa points out that the true strength of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry “lies not in the ‘hardware’ of science parks, but in the ‘soft power’ that allows universities, research institutions, and enterprises to collaborate seamlessly across boundaries.” He further notes, “While this speed and mutual trust can be transplanted to other countries, simply copying them is extremely difficult.”
At the same time, he states that the biggest challenge for Japan to revive its semiconductor industry is breaking away from its traditional “do-it-all-yourself” culture and secrecy, emphasizing that rebuilding an ecosystem that generates co-innovation is essential.
