In his interview, Professor Samukawa captures the true essence of the ecosystem with these words: “The core of Taiwan’s semiconductor ecosystem is not merely a structural connection of government, universities, research institutes, and corporations through systems and infrastructure. Instead, it is driven by highly trained, university-bred ‘people’—the experts—who circulate through a continuous loop from academia to national research labs, into the industry, and back to academia, carrying knowledge and technology with them. This is the true circulation of knowledge. Because of this flow, people across academia, government, and industry interact on a daily basis. By sharing ideas so naturally, they spark new innovations in both technology and industry. An ecosystem is not designed for a handful of companies or individuals to monopolize profits. It exists so that people can support one another, lifting the entire ecosystem toward collective prosperity. In essence, it is a philosophy of mutual success where everyone wins. In Taiwan, this fundamental value is deeply shared across society, which is exactly why their collaboration remains genuine, rather than degrading into a narrow pursuit of isolated, self-serving interests.”
